Nordic walking and weight loss: a practical 12-week programme

Nordic walking is recognised as one of the most effective sports for achieving sustainable weight loss. Its ability to burn between 20% and 46% more calories than traditional walking, combined with minimal impact on the joints, makes it an activity that is accessible even to those who are overweight.

The conditions for it to work

For Nordic walking to contribute to visible weight loss, three conditions must be met: a session of at least 30 minutes of continuous walking, a frequency of at least three sessions per week, and a diet that does not offset the calories burned. Without this last point, results will be limited.

Weekly calorie targets

A leading German study calculated that walking for 2 to 3 hours a week using Nordic walking techniques allows you to burn an extra 1,000 to 1,500 kcal per week. To reach 2,000 kcal, you need to increase your weekly training to 4 to 6.5 hours.

12-week programme — general structure

  • Weeks 1–3: 3 × 30 mins/week, comfortable pace (zone 2)
  • Weeks 4–6: 3 × 40 mins/week, introducing some hills
  • Weeks 7–9: 3 × 50 mins/week, alternating between zones 2 and 3
  • Weeks 10–12: 3 × 60 mins/week, including one long run at the weekend

Signs of progress

After 4 weeks, you should notice improved stamina, less breathlessness at a steady pace and less heavy legs after runs. Visible weight loss usually occurs between the 6th and 10th week, coupled with improved muscle tone (particularly in the arms and core).

Key takeaway: Three runs a week lasting 30 to 60 minutes are enough to see results in terms of weight after 8 to 12 weeks of regular exercise, whilst maintaining a balanced diet.
