One-piece or telescopic Nordic walking sticks: which should you choose?

When choosing Nordic walking sticks, one of the first questions is whether to go for one-piece (fixed) or telescopic poles. Both options have their advantages, but they do not offer the same performance, comfort or versatility.

One-piece poles: the benchmark for Nordic walking

One-piece Nordic walking sticks are made from a single tube with a fixed length. This construction makes them lighter, more rigid and significantly reduces vibrations compared with telescopic systems. That is why most instructors and specialist organisations recommend one-piece poles for regular practice: they provide a more direct, powerful push-off and better protection for your joints.

Telescopic poles: versatility and travel-friendly

Telescopic Nordic walking sticks are made up of two or three sections that slide into one another, allowing you to adjust the length. Their key advantage is adaptability: the same pair can be shared between people of different heights, and they are easier to transport in a car, train or suitcase. However, the added joints slightly reduce rigidity and can dampen the return of energy during the push, which is why they are mainly recommended for beginners, occasional walkers or those who travel frequently with their poles.

Which option for which profile?

If you practise Nordic walking regularly, want maximum propulsion and comfort for your joints, one-piece sticks are the gold standard. If you are just discovering Nordic walking, plan to share your poles or need compact gear for travel, telescopic models are a sensible compromise. In both cases, make sure you choose true Nordic walking sticks with a proper gantelet strap and carbide tips, not standard trekking poles.
