Nordic walking: 7 tips for choosing the right poles
Choosing your Nordic walking poles is no trivial matter. These two items are central to the biomechanics of the sport: a poor choice can reduce the benefits of the activity, cause pain in the shoulders or wrists, or simply put you off after just a few outings. Here are the 7 criteria that really make the difference.
1. Single-piece or telescopic?
This is the first choice you need to make. Single-piece poles (in one piece, non-adjustable) are favoured by regular practitioners and competitors for their lightness, rigidity and optimal energy transfer. Telescopic or foldable poles offer the advantage of adjustability and are easier to transport (particularly by plane). They are practical for beginners who do not yet know their ideal size, or for walkers who travel frequently.
For regular and serious use, the single-piece pole is the best choice.
2. Length: how to calculate it?
Length is one of the most critical factors. A pole that is too short will make you lean forward; one that is too long will work against you. The standard method: multiply your height (in cm) by 0.68. So, for someone who is 170 cm tall, the ideal length is around 115 cm.
But the measurement alone isn’t enough: always try your poles before buying. Stand the pole vertically in front of you, tip pointing downwards. Your forearm should be at a 90° angle to your upper arm, with your elbow slightly bent. Sporty walkers and competitors sometimes opt for a slightly longer length to gain more propulsion.
3. The material: carbon or aluminium?
Aluminium is cheaper, but it has a major drawback: it transmits vibrations rather than absorbing them, which can cause tendonitis in the shoulders and arms over long distances. Carbon is the material of choice for serious walking.
The carbon content determines the level of use:
- 50% carbon : a good entry-level option for occasional use
- 70–80% carbon : an excellent compromise for regular use
- 100% T700 carbon or higher : for intensive users, trail running and ultra-hikes

4. The shape of the pole: straight or curved?

A decisive factor for long distances and performance-oriented walking.
5. The handle and wrist strap
The handle must be ergonomic and comfortable to the touch. The cork absorbs perspiration and moulds to the shape of the hand over time. The technical rubber handles offer good grip in all conditions.
The gauntlet is just as important: it should be available in several sizes (S, M, L), preferably removable to facilitate refuelling, and allow the hand to open fully during the backstroke. A gauntlet that does not fit your hand shape is the leading cause of wrist pain.
6. The tip: which type to choose?
Tungsten carbide spikes are the gold standard: hard, durable, they wear slowly even on tarmac. Beveled spikes penetrate natural ground better and offer better grip. Double-beveled tips are ideal for mixed and technical terrain.
On hard surfaces (asphalt, concrete), use the rubber tips (pads) supplied with your pole, otherwise your tungsten tips will wear out quickly.
7. The brand and after-sales service
