Nordic Walking and Weight Loss: A Practical 12-Week Programme

Nordic walking is recognised as one of the most effective sports for losing weight sustainably. Its ability to burn between 20% and 46% more calories than ordinary walking, combined with minimal joint impact, makes it accessible even when overweight.

The conditions for it to work

For Nordic walking to contribute to visible weight loss, three conditions must be met: at least 30 continuous minutes per session, a frequency of at least 3 outings per week, and a diet that does not compensate for the calories burned. Without that last point, results will be limited.

Weekly calorie targets

A reference German study calculated that 2 to 3 hours of Nordic walking per week burns an additional 1,000 to 1,500 kcal per week. To reach 2,000 kcal, weekly training must rise to 4 to 6.5 hours.

12-week programme — general structure

  • Weeks 1–3: 3 × 30 min/week, comfortable pace (zone 2)
  • Weeks 4–6: 3 × 40 min/week, introducing a few hills
  • Weeks 7–9: 3 × 50 min/week, alternating zones 2 and 3
  • Weeks 10–12: 3 × 60 min/week, including one long weekend outing

Signs of progress

After 4 weeks, you should notice better endurance, less breathlessness at the same pace and lighter legs after outings. Visible weight loss generally arrives between weeks 6 and 10, together with improved muscle tone (particularly arms and trunk).

Key takeaway: 3 outings per week of 30 to 60 minutes are enough to see results on the scales after 8 to 12 weeks of regular practice, while keeping a balanced diet.
