An 8-Week Nordic Walking Training Programme
You have just taken up Nordic walking and want to progress in a structured way? This 8-week programme, at 3 sessions per week, will take you from beginner to regular practitioner with noticeably improved fitness.
The programme's principle: progressive intervals
This programme is based on alternating phases at a sustained pace (slightly out of breath, intensity 5-6/10) and recovery-pace phases (comfortable walking, intensity 3/10). This interval method is scientifically validated to improve both cardiovascular capacity and muscular endurance.
Weeks 1 and 2: getting started
3 outings of 30 minutes. Structure: 5 min warm-up / 5 repetitions of [1 min sustained pace + 3 min normal pace] / 5 min recovery. Goal: find your bearings with the poles, work on the technical movement.
Weeks 3 and 4: building
3 outings of 35 to 40 minutes. Structure: 5 min warm-up / 5 repetitions of [1 min 30 sustained + 3 min normal] / 5 min recovery. Goal: start to feel the propulsion and lengthen the stride.
Weeks 5 and 6: consolidation
3 outings of 40 to 50 minutes. Structure: 5 min warm-up / 5 repetitions of [2 min sustained + 3 min normal] / 5 min recovery. Goal: hold a pace for longer, tackle slightly rolling terrain.
Weeks 7 and 8: autonomy
3 outings of 45 to 60 minutes. Structure: 5 min warm-up / 5 repetitions of [3 min sustained + 3 min normal] / 5 min recovery. Goal: be able to hold a good pace for a full hour, master climbs and descents.
Additional advice
- Start every session with 5 minutes of very slow warm-up walking
- Finish with 5 minutes of recovery walking and light stretches
- If you are too tired, go back to the previous week without guilt
- Hydrate during and after every session
After 8 weeks, you should be able to practise 45 to 60 minutes at a good pace, with correct technique and without pain. This is the stage where the first measurable benefits appear on cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone and weight control.
Progressing with support: the MØNARC® Partner Clubs
A programme holds better with others. Since autumn 2026, the MØNARC® Partner Club label distinguishes clubs where curved poles are known and explained, with €30 off per pair of arcs for members. The choice between progressing alone or in a group is weighed in our back-to-season article.
Key takeaway: 3 sessions per week, progressive over 8 weeks, with effort and recovery intervals. Regularity counts more than intensity.
