Nordic walking in the city: tips, terrain and gear
Nordic walking is often associated with forest trails and countryside landscapes. Yet millions of people around the world practise it in urban environments: in parks, along canal paths or on greenways. With the right gear and a few precautions, the city becomes a perfectly suitable training ground.
The main challenge: hard surfaces
Asphalt, concrete and cobblestones do not allow you to plant the metal tip of the pole properly. Without adaptation, the tip slips, the noise annoys people around you and the tip wears out much faster. The solution is simple: rubber tips.
Using rubber tips correctly in town
The rubber tip fits over the metal point and creates a solid contact surface without piercing the ground. Position it so that the base sits flat and parallel to the ground to maximise grip. On very smooth paving or wet surfaces, one trick is to flip the tip the other way round so that the metal point bites slightly through the rubber and improves traction.
The best urban terrains
- Parks and public gardens (semi-natural ground, fewer people on weekdays)
- Greenways and towpaths
- Riverside or lakeside paths
- Running tracks in athletics stadiums
- Cemetery paths (often clear, flat and quiet)
Adapting your technique on hard ground
On asphalt with rubber tips, the pole angle is slightly less pronounced than on natural terrain. Shock absorption is reduced, which can tire your arms and shoulders more quickly over time. Limit purely urban sessions to 45 minutes at first and build in sections on grass or dirt whenever possible.
Safety and etiquette
In an urban setting, stay alert to other path users such as cyclists, runners and walkers. Signal your presence verbally and avoid walking side by side in a group on narrow paths. When turning round, take care not to point your poles towards other people.
Key takeaway: Nordic walking in the city is perfectly feasible with suitable rubber tips. Favour parks, greenways and riverside paths so you can alternate between hard surfaces and more natural ground.
