Choosing the right shoes for Nordic walking

The poles tend to steal the limelight, but shoes remain the cornerstone of Nordic walking equipment. The wrong choice can lead to blisters, foot pain, sprains or poor technique. Here’s what you need to know.

Key features

The ideal shoe for Nordic walking should be flexible (so you can feel your foot rolling from heel to toe), lightweight, breathable and have a grippy sole for varied terrain. It should also provide sufficient lateral support to prevent ankle twists on uneven ground.

Trail shoes: the best choice

Low-cut trail shoes offer the best compromise: a lugged sole for grip, lightness, flexibility and sufficient protection against stones. They are suitable for natural trails and the mixed terrain typically encountered in Nordic walking. An upper that is too high (such as those for heavy hiking) restricts ankle mobility and hinders the foot’s natural roll.

Shoes to avoid

  • Running shoes with very thick, rigid soles (poor proprioceptive feedback)
  • High, rigid hiking boots (hinder the foot’s natural roll)
  • Sandals or lightweight shoes with no support (risk of sprains)
  • Street shoes (no grip, no suitable cushioning)

The importance of footwear when choosing pole length

The thickness of your shoes’ soles has a slight influence on your body’s position relative to the ground and therefore on the ideal length of your poles. For this reason, it is recommended that you measure your poles whilst wearing your usual Nordic walking shoes, rather than barefoot or in socks.

Socks: a detail that matters

Technical socks made from synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon) or merino wool wick away sweat better than cotton and reduce the risk of blisters. Avoid cotton socks for long walks.

Key points: A low-cut, flexible, lightweight trail shoe with good grip is the ideal choice for Nordic walking. Always measure your poles whilst wearing your usual shoes.
